What is a UVV inspection?
A UVV inspection on vehicles is conducted to ensure safety on the roads. The Accident Prevention Regulations (UVV) are legally mandated regulations in Germany (DGUV Regulation 70) designed to prevent accidents during the use of vehicles and ensure the safety of those on the road.

This regulation applies especially to vehicles used within the scope of business activities, such as company vehicles, forklifts, vans, forklift trucks, or construction machinery.
The UVV inspection on the vehicle can be carried out by specially trained professionals or an inspection organization, for example, as part of the vehicle’s main inspection or by a workshop. The UVV inspection must be conducted on the vehicle once a year. The execution and documentation of this are the responsibility of the vehicle owner or employer.
What is the purpose of a UVV inspection sticker?
A UVV inspection sticker indicates that a vehicle has undergone regular safety inspections according to the Accident Prevention Regulations (UVV). The sticker includes information such as the year of inspection and the next inspection date. It serves as evidence that the vehicle complies with safety requirements at the time of inspection. The UVV sticker contributes to ensuring safety in the workplace and on the road, confirming that the vehicle meets the applicable safety standards.
Is the UVV inspection sticker legally required?
In Germany, a UVV sticker is not explicitly mandated. However, the UVV inspection on vehicles is subject to the regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Accident Prevention Regulation “Vehicles” (DGUV Regulation 70), which prescribe regular safety inspections.
The actual obligation lies in the vehicle owner or operator conducting the UVV inspection according to legal requirements and documenting the results. Documenting the inspection is crucial to provide evidence that the vehicle complies with safety requirements and that the inspection is conducted regularly. This proof is legally required, as per Section 57(2) of the Accident Prevention Regulation “Vehicles”, and should be kept until the next UVV inspection.
The results of the inspection according to paragraph 1 must be documented in writing and kept for at least until the next inspection.
While a UVV sticker in Germany does not represent a legal obligation, it can still be used as a practical tool to indicate the status of the inspection.
Difference from the TÜV sticker
While the main inspection, conducted by TÜV and other technical inspection authorities, focuses on roadworthiness, the UVV inspection primarily addresses occupational safety. Its basis is not derived from traffic law but is related to state occupational safety regulations. The TÜV sticker, also known as the “Main inspection sticker”, serves as proof that the vehicle has successfully passed the main inspection (HU).
Similar to TÜV stickers, UVV stickers are typically not white but distinguish themselves through various colors (green, orange, violet, light blue, red, and brown). These six common yearly colors repeat every four to six years. However, there are no legal requirements for the color design of UVV stickers, as each provider can define its own colors.
